Complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the immediate postnatal period such as postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, obstructed labor, and birth asphyxia, can rapidly become life-threatening if care is delayed. Timely identification, immediate stabilization, and rapid referral are essential components in preventing avoidable maternal and neonatal deaths.
To address these challenges directly at the primary care level, the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB), with support from UNICEF, recently organized a 3-day residential training on Basic Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (BEmONC) from October 21st to 23rd, 2026.
Key Highlights:
- 40 Healthcare Workers Trained: Participants across all 23 LGAs enhanced their clinical knowledge and hands-on emergency response skills.
- Practical & Lifesaving Skills: Focused on identifying and managing major obstetric complications, neonatal resuscitation, emergency preparedness, and timely referrals.
- Interactive Learning: Combined hands-on demonstrations, case studies, and pre/post-test assessments to build real-world clinical confidence.
By strengthening our primary health care workforce, we are building a safer, healthier future for mothers and babies in every community across Rivers State.
The Board remains committed to guarantee safe childbirth and quality healthcare delivery for every mother and child in Rivers State.
