On July 24, 2024, Nigeria's Health Commissioner Dr. Adaeze Oreh unveiled a new maternal health initiative. The program provides point-of-care ultrasound services at primary health centers to evaluate pregnancy wellness and identify high-risk cases early.
The initiative trained twenty medical professionals to deliver these imaging services at designated facilities throughout the region. The state government subsidized costs to make services affordable for pregnant women. During the launch week, ultrasounds were offered free of charge to expectant mothers.
According to officials, the non-invasive imaging procedure serves multiple pregnancy stages and aligns with Governor Siminalayi Fubara's healthcare expansion goals. The service aims to decrease maternal and fetal complications through timely identification of concerning pregnancies requiring specialized care.
Health officials encouraged pregnant women to visit participating primary health centers to access these subsidized services.
